![]() With Valieva … I’ve honestly never even considered whether or not I wish she had a long career ahead of her simply because I’ve accepted that with the way women’s skating works now, it’s an unanswerable question. She was past her competitive peak, yes, but I will never, ever dog her for those seasons, because she actually did the things so many of us wanted to see her do, and I will always support skaters for trying, even if the process isn’t particularly pretty. Whatever my complaints about Medvedeva’s skating (and trust me, I had many), at least she tried to fix her issues and actually worked on some of the most common fan complaints during her seasons with Orser (eliminate the ‘Tano on the 2A, stop with the labored transitions, no more pantomime, etc.). Not her fault, but that means that much of what I want to see improve in her skating - the “hitch” between jumps in her combos, her frequently wobbly axis, her relatively limited program variety and program construction - isn’t going to happen. I greatly dislike her Bolero program, but I am also acutely aware of the fact that this is as good as it gets, as she has high odds of completing the entire career slam this season (GPF, Euros, Olympics, and Worlds) and will probably only be around for two senior seasons. But part of it is also the high burn rate in women’s, which, again, isn’t Valieva’s fault, but it’s also impossible to ignore. Or, well, I exist, as I’m pretty sure I’m alone on that one. Some of that is because I don’t value flexibility all that highly and actually dislike a lot of hyper-extended spin positions on a purely aesthetic level, which is not Valieva’s fault and isn’t something I hold against her, but for what it’s worth, people like me do exist. Valieva is very, very, very good and I also have zero emotional response to her. * Limited social media/celebrity watching * No criticism in conjunction with novelty accounts ![]() * No asking about fitting of a particular model of boot * Discussion of fitness and nutrition limited no medical advice * No name calling or drama for the sake of drama * No bigotry, hate speech, slurs, or trolling Sub-reddits of interest for fitness and nutrition: Fédération Française des Sports de Glace.Whether you're a skater, fan, parent, coach, or zamboni, welcome!Īm I too old to start skating?
